Many of the killers songs are very performance based with lights and focus on the singer, often he is going through the emotions of the lyrics and the song. intense lighting is a key theme of the performance. their style is often feeling the emotions and not having the extreme levels of excitement like we have been exposed to by the other pop rock genre bands. The band has an emotional instability about them which is explored through all of their music video's. weather it be the location of the middle of the dessert which is reflective of the bands distance from the normal world. or the emotions displayed through the singer in the dark atmospheres
The album 'Hot Fuss' seems to follows a guys struggle with women. throughout the songs names and lyrics are about his issues in the relationship. We get a sense of that the guys girlfriend is actually a lesbian and throughout the album is exposing his feelings through what has happened. 'jenny was a friend of mine' explains that he is in love with his girlfriend but her close friend is actually a lie and is actually her girlfriend. 'Mr brightside' crosses over the complexity that he thought that the affair was with a man and the insecurities he has experienced throughout the relationship with this belief. continuing through the album to 'smile like you mean it' we see how the relationship is now in its very last stages, both are unhappy and that the guy is struggling with the fact that his once girlfriend is now being driven around by their partner down the same roads of which they used to. 'somebody told me' exposes the fact the girl does infact have a girlfriend and after they have split up. 'all these things that ive done' and 'Andy, you're a star' cover the fact that his efforts are not enough and that the whole time he has been ignorant to the fact that she is a lesbian but is reassured that she is sorry and that he is good for understand. 'midnight show' explores the guys struggles with still seeing his ex girlfriend and the way people are still trying to assist him with coping under the difficult circumstances he is under. the album continues to cement the idea that the guy and his girlfriend have experienced the difficulty of the break-up caused by his girlfriend having an affair with another girl.
As many of their songs are focused on this difficulty. we see many shots where the singer is singled out. smile like you mean it has many shots where the singer is alone and showing distress that exposes the deepness of his feelings which are concealed within the lyrics of each song.
A clear tone of self constriction of the main singer is displayed throughout the album and has previously shown in many music videos' and will be reflected through my own interpretation of the killers. as the constriction is displayed through the locations being desolate, secluded and simple. this reflects overall tone throughout the album and the killers way of presenting themselves with odd clothing shown in 'human' and 'read my mind'. such clothing suggest and individuality of which nobody truly understands.
From looking into the meaning behind the whole album i have come to the conclusion that the album is on the man and his girlfriend and the difficulties faced with her homosexuality being found whilst in a relationship with him. Through the locations, emotions and clothing worn by the band the ability to cope is low through many parts of the bands video's, both new and old. to continue this forward i must consider in depth the location that i will use to display such constriction and also the costumes and emotions that the parts must play in order to get across the true killers feel.
