Research - Camera Angles Used

Looking into the pop rock genre i have witnessed some common shots used in the pop rock music videos. many bands use a sort of long shot which is like an establishing shot of the whole band. this shot often zooms in or out and will be used many times throughout the video.

This long shot brings us into the band and gives us an opportunity to get a first impression on them. we experience them all together as a collect group and we feel we are introduced to them. it is always seen as an essential shot to open up the band as a group in a performance and should be first seen early on when the whole band is playing together, if not before.

During more upbeat parts they use a lot of low angle shots. looking up on the band. this gives the sense of confidence as the band jumps around and moves alot. this is often showing the hecticness and fun that can come in the pop rock genre.

Using this shot tells us that they are manic. the movement of the characters, the low angle shows how they are ontop and to be looked up to. this works well as it makes them almost god like and to be desired.

a two shot is used on regular basis with either the guitarist or singer and the drummer in the background. alot of the time they use this with the focus on the singer and the backing person in a slight blur, or they will have a guitarist and the drummer in focus. It shows when they want to focus on different members. I have noticed a common trend where the drummer is always shown with another member in shot or at least a part of them in shot

this two shot lines up on the right half and the drummer lines up inside the left third. often used with a pan or movement across the band. also this shot is at a slight low angle to give us a feeling of watching the performance as if it were a live performance. Also in the pop rock genre, we see the convention of being egotistic.with this shot we are able to capture the whole image of the person reflecting their style and with their movement often displays a feeling of how self obsessed they are.

Close ups are often used in pop rock genre as they allow the audience to get a feel for the emotions being displayed by the singer and their vibe and feeling for the band. often side profile or straight up front allow us to see into them alot closer than we ever would in a live performance.

Here, Kings of Leon and Paramore display how close and how much emotion can be displayed through close ups and with careful positioning can make the character seem depressive, secluded or powerful. Manipulating this will give me the chance to display the emotion i want and hopefully show how secluded they are from the rest of the world.
