Film Reports - Day 3

Today we went out to film the plain walls look with the idea being it being a mental home. it turns out it is almost impossible to find a straight jacket without paying a silly amount for one so we settled on some slow shots in the plain white walls setting to show isolation of the singer. also going out to a woods down the road where we could get our opening shot from.

The day was simple we only needed 2 people on set with 1 camera and the back up incase we needed it. it was quite relaxed in the way that we had a large amount of time to film it and no real rush with timings of having to leave so we took our time. myself and jack set about taking everything out the room that was in shot and kept anything that was immovable or was not detrimental to the shots that we were taking that day. we then set the tripod up for the front on shots which were inspired by kings of leon 'loose somebody'. This went through 4 takes as the first two were far too dark on the camera we were using so we switched to the back up which managed to give us more light than the other. this enhanced our images quality. we also tried to light it with a small torch but it made the image look awful so we scrapped it for the 3rd and 4th takes. we then did a range of establishing shots that set the scene of the room including a few close ups and high angle shots to make the character look even smaller and weaker than we have already portrayed him as. this effect will hopefully put in stone the fact that he has nowhere to go and has an instability caused by the relationship.

We finished up and put the scene back to normal and then went off in jacks car to the woods which were a 5 minute journey from my house. Here we shot the opening shots and a few tree pieces. this was bit harder as there was no song to play over the top to get jacks miming perfect we believe i worked as we played the recording back with the music on a phone and it looked to match up. yet we found this difficult as we had no cues and the miming was a struggle because of this. in all we filmed it quite successfully on the limited crew we had but we would change the miming issue that we had. i thought we adapted well by being critical of our work and thus found an issues which we corrected quickly and easily with a simple change.

This concluded our filming process. Our editing could result in some refilling of some shots but it may not. in all i believe that we were able to get a strong focus with our footage and used a variety of locations and technology through our filming which allowed us to get good quality shots which stuck and challenged the codes and conventions in different areas. we used all the varieties of shots which we could possibly use to enhance the impact including, two shots, close up, mid and long shots. we used a variety of establishing shots and angles to display power and represent a power balance which may or may not be present but depends on the viewers interpretation. along with this we tried to incorporate the general shots which are used in the genre and the performance based video which we aimed to get in a style that is effective yet punched in a way that appeals to the nature of the audience.

In all i thought our filming process went well but there are some things i would change. i would want to invest in a rolling track to fix the camera on. this would enable us to go around the focus point and move smoothly rather than jerky difficult movements that are caused by the movement of the cameraman and him being the only ballast for the camera. i would also like to be able to control the lights better that we used in the performance as this was difficult to get right and wanted more of a flash and movement. yet we used it well in the fact it gave it an amateur look that played upon the ironic path our superstars take. i would also want to give myself an easier role by not being a part of the band and being only the director of photography. i would also like to rethink the general concept of the video and go for a more montage effect that would resemble the singers thoughts but that was not my decision. i believe this look would of achieved better results as we could of used a lot of establishing shots to set a mystical scene which we would explore with our character. i would also reshoot the part with the girl and go into more depth about what was going on. we hope the song lyrics will manage this in the video. overall i am satisfied with what we did but limited ourselves a bit and if given another chance could achieve much greater results. yet we still have put together some quality shots and provided  adequate footage for the editor.
